Embracing Nature: Discovering the Magic of Moss Art in Interior Spaces

Do you love nature and are you thinking about how to incorporate a touch of greenery into your interior that would bring you joy without requiring regular care? One option is to get a moss wall art. We talked to Benjamin Raich, the Sales Director of Němec Company, about this attractive element that combines design and nature.

Can we say that moss wall art truly requires no maintenance?

Yes, moss art is truly an ideal choice for anyone who desires a low-maintenance green element. Unlike cascading gardens, which our company also implements, moss art has absolutely no maintenance requirements or technical infrastructure. Therefore, it can also be used as a solution for places where it is not feasible to bring water or drainage.

Does that mean moss doesn't require any care at all?

It should be clarified that the moss used is not alive. Many people believe that moss can be cultivated indoors, but that is not true. While we do use real moss, it is stabilized and non-living. It is preserved in a glycerin solution, which is completely safe for health, although it may have a specific scent that dissipates within two to three weeks.

Could it happen that this modified moss loses its color over time?

If direct sunlight were to shine on the preserved moss, it could cause some fading since it is not treated with any UV filter. However, under normal lighting conditions, such as in shade or semi-shade, there is no color loss. If you choose to place the moss art on a wall where it receives direct sunlight for eight hours a day, you should expect the colors to fade over time. It is important to note that all preserved plants, including moss, should not be exposed to direct sunlight or be watered or misted. With a moss art you can simply just admire its delicate beauty.

So, stabilized moss is a delicate material. How long does such a picture last?

We provide a five-year warranty. However, assuming the moss is placed in optimal conditions, which means in a dry environment and away from direct sunlight, there is no reason why you couldn't enjoy it for much longer, even up to ten years or more. It is possible for mechanical damage to occur; some people can't resist the temptation to touch the moss out of curiosity. However, it is indeed delicate and can be easily disturbed or dislodged. The advantage, though, is that damaged or empty spots can be easily filled with new material.

Is there a risk of moths or other insects getting into moss pictures? And can they be cleaned?

There is no such risk with moss art as the moss is stabilized. In the five years that we have been dealing with moss art, we have never encountered any pest infestation. However, dust may settle on the moss over time, which is inevitable. Regular cleaning is recommended and can be done either with compressed air or by very gently vacuuming using a low-power setting on a vacuum cleaner.

Are there any limits in terms of creativity with moss art?

The variability is diverse. We have more than ten types of moss available - forest moss with beautiful long fibers, vibrant green reindeer moss with a soft texture, Spanish moss that grows in the form of spaghetti-like tendrils, or royal moss with fresh green waves complemented by brown clusters. We combine mosses with lichens as well as various stones, twigs, and other natural elements that can be incorporated into the picture. When it comes to using moss, we can be highly creative and create remarkable mosaics. Each moss art or moss wall is unique and original.

What size can moss art "grow" to?

When it comes to the size of the moss surface area, we have no limitations. However, if the art is to have a frame, we are restricted by its size. We can create large frames, for example, with dimensions of 2 by 2 meters, but we always have to consider the size of doors for installation. You can have a moss art in a design frame made of minimalist Betonepox® polished plaster, which creates an impressive contrast and allows the green beauty to stand out. We have also created moss columns that transition into a moss ceiling. Moss can be utilized according to one's imagination, with the only significant condition being that it should be placed indoors. While vertical cascading gardens can decorate the exteriors of buildings, moss art cannot be installed outdoors due to weather conditions.
